The Story Behind Shedding

The Story Behind Shedding

It’s that time of year again.  Pet hair is flying everywhere and the shedding just never seems to slow down.  The good news is that Aussie Pet Mobile can really help you solve this problem.  First, let’s take a quick look at why shedding is such a pervasive problem with our four-legged friends.

Believe it or not, once you see hair, it’s already dead.  Hair is produced by living cells in your pet’s body, but the part you see is already dead once it appears.  The body’s living cells keep pushing out more hair.  The part you see is called the hair shaft.  Hair grows in 4 phases and the length is determined by genetics.  Shedding occurs in the 4th phase which is often referred to as the shedding phase.  This is a constant process in dogs and cats.  At all times, hair is going through this process and so there is always hair in the 4th or shedding phase.  Different pets shed at different rates and this can vary by breed, by species, and even by region of the country or time of year.  For example, domestic short-haired cats shed more during the summer than during the winter.

Shedding is a natural part of life for your dogs or cats.  Even hairless animals can shed but their shedding just isn’t noticeable. In most instances, dog shedding is related to the time of year.  Changes in sunlight will impact shedding cycles.  As days grow longer, hair grows faster.  Spring shedding tends to be faster but that is only one factor.  Many pets drop their undercoats in bigger ways twice a year and their topcoats once a year.  Some dogs have their hair come out in big tufts which we often call “blowing” their coat.  But, dog shedding happens all year round.  Cats don’t care what time of year it is, they shed all the time!  Because shedding is related to the length of the day, animals that live indoors tend to shed all the time.

So if shedding is a normal tendency for most pets, why do we recommend de-shedding treatments for your pets?  The most obvious issue is the hair all over your house, all over your clothes, and all over your furniture.  Shedding can irritate your pet’s skin and impact the natural insulation which protects your pet.  Shedding can lead to excessive hairballs in cats.  Don’t you love waking up to that wonderful sound cats make as they expel hairballs during the middle of the night?  Even dogs can be susceptible to hairballs which can cause issues with the digestive system.  The best thing for your pet is regular grooming and regular, steady, de-shedding treatments.

Aussie Pet Mobile is ready to help.  Adding a de-shedding treatment service to our 15 Step SPA grooming program will make a huge difference in the amount of shedding that comes from your four-legged friends.  The benefits of the de-shedding treatment are cumulative.  The more you do it, the better the results.  Done regularly, de-shedding can reduce your pet’s shedding by up to 90%.  It’s true.  Ask your local Aussie Pet Mobile operator all about our great de-shedding service.  It’s the best thing to happen to pets since the dog biscuit!  Call 1-800-PET-MOBILE today and book your appointment for our premium grooming services.
